ORIGINAL NOTE CARD SERIES

Old photos and antiques each have their own story to tell. Bringing these findings back to life and recycling them is an important aspect in my process. Recyling Memories utilizes the idea of recycling and reusing not only objects but the earlier ideas and techniques of written exchanges, technology and photography. A set of note cards was designed reusing old photos and styles to inspire creativity and then was mailed out randomly to people throughout the country. They were asked to alter, add, or change the note card in any way they wanted, whether it be adding photos of their ancestors and using their imagination. Participants then mailed the note cards back to me, only to be sent out again to others who repeated the process and fed off of what other people changed or added. This project combines vintage findings, photographs and ancestral obsessions and recycles them through modern and contemporary appeal.
After receiving the altered note cards back a second time, I gathered the new data and used it as inspiration for a new series of cards. Poems, drawings, photos and other various things from the participants now adorn the second series. This new set of notecards is available at the gallery location for visitors to become part of the process as well. They can edit the cards and either take it home and send it away themselves or place it in the mailbox at the gallery site to be sent out to whomever they wish. Recycling Memories is an collaborative effort that can constantly be recycled and introduced to new ideas, and ultimately bringing the process full circle.
My goal is for my viewer to have a connection to the art by recycling the past and giving them a sense of history and nostalgia. No matter what culture we come from we all have a history. We all communicate in some form, whether it be via cell phone, in person, letters or email, gestures or expressions. This experiment also allows people to connect with other people who may never connect in their lifetime. They can feed off each others creativity without ever really meeting face to face.
